Reading this beautifully written piece, I found myself deeply moved—and then, suddenly, confronted by a different kind of question.

What happens when our efforts to understand the Umwelten of others—of animals, insects, even ecosystems—lead not only to wonder and humility, but also to exploitation? When knowledge about the sensory world of the “other” is used not to respect it, but to dominate it? Where, then, do we draw the line between understanding and control?

Perhaps the “humble gaze” you evoke so powerfully is itself a kind of answer. A stance that insists that to truly see the other—whether human or nonhuman—is to resist the urge to assimilate or weaponize that knowledge.

This reflection stayed with me through a quiet weekend morning. I turned off my phone notifications and went for a walk in a nearby park—just a modest gesture, but perhaps enough to slightly open the chambers of my own perception. Thank you for the invitation to do so.
